McMenamins Kennedy School

5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211

"An old elementary school converted into a fun hangout spot and hotel. Restaurant, bars, a brewery and even a movie theater and soaking pool. Really cool designs and art all around. The Boiler Room is my go to spot but make sure to walk all around and check it out. The only time I actually look forward to going to school."

Level Beer (Level 1)

5211 NE 148th Ave, Portland, OR 97230

"A popular local brewery. They have a few locations but Level 1 is their original (and best) location. Good drinks and great food cart options to pick from. Covered outdoor seating with heat. There’s some limited indoor seating options but the atmosphere outside is better. Dog friendly and all ages allowed."

QuarterWorld Arcade

4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97215

"A fun “Bar-cade” with tons of games, pinball machines, drinks and food. The “Change Machine” is always my first stop, I win every time. Located in a popular area with a lot of bars and restaurants within walking distance."

Rocky Butte / Joseph Wood Hill Park

3102 NE Rocky Butte Rd, Portland, OR 97220

"Take the road up to the top of the butte and hangout at Joseph Wood Hill Park for some amazing views (if the skies are clear...). Great spot for a picnic. Gates to the short loop around the park might be closed but you can park nearby and walk up the short staircase to check everything out. Bring a camera!"

Cascade Locks

(City in the Columbia River Gorge)

"Enjoy the drive along the Columbia River while you make your way out. Drive or walk up to one of the order windows at Eastwind Drive-in and grab some food. And make sure to get some soft serve ice cream, it’s what they’re known for. But DO NOT order a large. It’s huge and you won’t be able to keep up with it melting if it’s warm. Then take your food down to Cascade Locks Marine Park and enjoy the views while you eat your food and wipe the melted ice cream off of your hands and clothes because curiosity got the best of you and you decided to order a large to see it for yourself."

Powell’s City of Books

1005 W Burnside St., Portland, OR 97209

"I moved to Portland for Powell’s.  (And the Gorge, but we’ll get to that).  If you love the smell of musty paper tinged with espresso while perusing thousands of physical manifestations of ideas, this is your place.  Don’t miss the sci-fi/fantasy pillar signed by greats I can’t even list here! Or the rare book room on the top floor…it’s worth every step."

Willamette Valley Wineries

"The entire valley is known for having just the right conditions to grow Pinot Noir. It’s also beautiful country down there, and I strongly recommend a driving tour if you like wine and have a little extra time.  Be sure to stop by Durant Vineyards and say ‘Hi’ to Jim for me before going for a stroll on the farm and enjoying the EPIC views!"

The ‘Gorge’ (Columbia River Gorge)

"The other reason I moved here.  80 miles long, and breathtaking river views you won’t find anywhere else. A quick trip to Multnomah Falls will give you a taste, but there are multitudes of trails and hidden waterfalls to explore! Don’t forget a book, binoculars, sketchpad…

McMenamins Rehabilitated Historic Buildings

"Multiple locations! For years the McMenamins brothers have been saving old properties and transforming them into funky hotels, pubs, distilleries, and concert venues…each one a unique work of art. Many are on the National Register of Historic Places and most are said to be haunted. If you are making a trip out to the Gorge - pay a visit to McMenamins Edgefield. It was constructed in 1911 as the county’s poor farm and is now home to a winery, distillery, brewery, hotel, hostel, gift shop, 10 restaurants and bars, pool hall, spa, soaking pool, movie theater, golf course, on-site glass blower, and concert venue. Give yourself time to get lost in the magnificent gardens surrounding the old brick buildings on this 74 acre property."
